After today’s game with Boston was postponed and Manny Ramirez was done hitting in the cage, he showed another side of Manny that hasn’t been seen all that often: apologetic and responsible Manny. (more…)

Juan Pierre: Better Than Scott Podsednik

Posted by robert.novak
September 3, 2010

Ever since we decided to not sign Scott Podsednik to a deal and then traded for Juan Pierre, there has been nothing but criticisms. Time and time again everyone says we are worse off with Juan Pierre. Juan Pierre is not a good lead-off hitter, Juan Pierre can’t hit, Juan Pierre isn’t a good fit, any and all criticisms people could come up with, they have used on Juan Pierre. <–more–>

With about a month left in the season, I think it’s a good time to compare how Juan Pierre and Scott Podsednik have done this season when stacked up side by side.

This season, Scott Podsednik has a BA of .303, a OBP of .348, and a SLG of .382. Juan Pierre on the other hand has a BA of .284, a OBP of .353, and a SLG of .327. We can throw out the slugging percentage for the most part because neither guy is a real home run threat. While Podsednik has an advantage in batting average, Pierre has the advantage in on base percentage so you can count that as a wash.

Podsednik does have 5 home runs compared to Pierre’s 1 home run but again, that really doesn’t matter because they are lead-off hitters and aren’t really known for home runs.

Podsednik has driven in 50 RBI compared to Pierre’s 36 RBI. Yes having a lead-off man that can drive in runs is a good thing, but it’s not their primary job either.

In the departments that really count, Podsednik has scored 61 runs and has 157 hits. Those hits include 12 doubles and 7 triples. He also has 35 stolen bases and walked 39 times. A big concern though, is that he has struck out 77 times as well, a relatively high number for a guy that is supposed to be making contact with the ball.

Pierre, however, has scored 77 runs and has 151 hits. Of those hits, 16 are doubles and 2 are triples. He also has a MLB leading 53 stolen bases. He has 39 walks and 39 strikeouts, much better in comparison to Podsednik.

So when you look at the numbers are consider all the factors, Juan Pierre is having a better year than Podsednik all around, he is doing what he is supposed to as a lead-off hitter better than Podsednik, and he is the better option for the White Sox as their lead-off hitter.

So whether all you Juan Pierre haters want to face it or not, all your criticisms were for nothing because Pierre has done more than his share of work at the top of the order. I’m glad he’ll be around again next year, so all you Juan Pierre haters can eat his dust on his way to stealing another 50+ bases while posting a .353 OBS.

With Hurricane Earl wreaking havoc across the east coast, subsequently postponing tonight’s game between the Red Sox and White Sox, I figure now is a good time to reflect on the month of August for the White Sox. (more…)

Chicago White Sox vs Boston Red Sox Game 1 Postponed, Doubleheader Saturday

Posted by robert.novak
September 3, 2010

As I said earlier today, with Hurricane Earl looming in the Atlantic and the possibility of 2 inches of rain falling in Boston tonight, game 1 between the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox has been officially postponed.

It’s already been announced that the Red Sox and White Sox will play a doubleheader tomorrow. Game 1 will start a 1:05 PM and game 2 will start at 7:10 (both EST times)

Starting pitchers for both games haven’t been announced but I’d expect them to be made before the end of the night.

It’s a bummer for the White Sox who are on a 3 game winning streak but if there is any positive on this, it’s that they may have avoided facing Clay Buchholz this series.

Night of Champions and New Features

First off, I’d just like to thank everyone that has taken the time to read my blogs and has made this site as successful as it has been. I can only hope to have your further support and I will continue to deliver the news and my opinions to the best of my ability. I also have appreciated the comments that a few of you have made and I encourage all of you to comment as often as you like.

Now onto the good stuff:

As we all know, this past weekend the White Sox held the very first Night of Champions at U.S. Cellular Field prior to the game against the Yankees. This was a very momentous occasion as Chicago is the only city to have won a championship in all major sports in the past 25 years. To make the occasion even more special, all 4 championship trophies were put on the field with representatives from every team right there with them.

Those pictures were sent to me by one of our very own bloggers so I’d like to thank them for that.

This brings me to my first new feature I’d like to start up. Every week I’d like to do a post highlighting some pictures taken by our readers and even our other bloggers. They can be of anything you like but the only rule is that the pictures must have to have something White Sox related in them. Aside from that, the choice is up to you.

Another thing I’d like to try starting up is a weekly mailbag. I would like for you all to send in any questions you may have about the White Sox themselves or anything affiliated with the White Sox and once or twice a week I will answer them.

Send all pictures and questions to whitesoxrant@gmail.com

Again, thank you to all our readers and I hope to hear your questions and see your pictures really soon.
